Ahmaud Arbery
Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was shot and killed while on a run in a suburban neighborhood in Glynn County, Georgia on February 23, 2020, in a targeted attack by Gregory and Travis McMichael, who had suspected Arbery as the perpetrator of recent home invasions. On May 7, 2020, Gregory and Travis McMichael were finally arrested on charges of murder and aggravated assault, along with William Bryan, 50, was also arrested in May 2020 and charged with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment, following his filming of the murder. Shortly following Arbery's murder, Roc Nation and Team Roc published an open letter to Georgia officials in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution seeking justice for Ahmaud Arbery. The letter was signed by JAY-Z, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill, and Yo Gotti, in addition to civil rights attorneys, Lee Merritt and Benjamin Crump. It calls for District Attorney Tom Durden to remove himself, citing a conflict of interest due to Gregory McMichael’s past as a police officer. It also asks for a fair trial and the naming of William Bryan as an armed accomplice.
