Trayvon Martin
On February 26, 2012 Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. While on a walk back from a nearby convenience store, Martin was identified as suspicious by a member of the neighborhood watch, George Zimmerman. The report devolved into an altercation, resulting in Zimmerman fatally shooting Martin in the chest. Zimmerman claimed the shooting was out of self defense, and due to Florida's stand-your-ground law, initially evaded any arrests or charges. Once Zimmerman was eventually charged and tried, he was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in July 2013. In 2018, Jay-Z co-produced Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.
