JJ Velazquez
JJ Velazquezwas wrongfully sentenced to 25 years at Sing Sing Correctional Facility for the January 27, 1998 murder of Retired NYPD officer Albert Ward. In 2002, Velazquez sent a letter to Dan Slepian, NBC News producer and United Justice Coalition advisor, detailing his innocence. This letter inspired Slepian to investigate Velazquez's case and story. Over the course of a decade, Slepian and fellow Dateline NBC producers identified and interviewed witnesses, culminating in a Dateline broadcast on February 12, 2012. The broadcast served as the catalyst for the review of Velazquez's case by the Manhattan District Attorney's Conviction Integrity Unit in 2013. After numerous motions filed, denials and appeals by Velazquez and his representation, he was officially released from Sing Sing Correctional Facility in September 2021, after being granted executive clemency by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Letters from Sing Sing broadcast has now been reproduced as a podcast from NBC News.
